The Process

A blending of traditional craft and digital know-how… How I like to work, and bring the pages to life.

I like to imagine I am still working with analog media; pencil paper, ink, etc…

There are obvious concessions with working digitally, but I try to limit those. (more on that later) and I like to maintain a hand-drawn aesthetic.

I start with a basic story outline. All the major beats are worked out but the detail of the story really comes out as I start to draw.

I write the dialogue and draw a rough layout for a few pages, at least until the end of a story beat. Then I go back and clean up my doodles a bit before inking and blocking colour.

I found committing to any lighting and fine detail is a pain in the butt to re-address later, so I avoid that until larger sections are more finished and the story is more solidified, as that kind of ‘effort-restriction’ limits me from wanting to go back and fix major story errors.

The final stage is the texturing and lighting, and this is where I start to make some concessions outside of simply being able to erase. I paint individual layers for each light source and using various screens and overlay operations to layer them over the flat colour. This gives me the flexibility to change the colour and mood of the whole scene while maintaining the volume and contouring of the character.
